Bosch's intelligent video surveillance prevents encounter between humans and bears in the Arctic
Oooguruk's oil rig has 11 Bosch MIC IP Fusion 9000i cameras. These are responsible for protecting staff and detecting approaching polar bears.
The Oooguruk Drill Site (ODS) is an important location for Caelus Natural Resources Alaska, which has produced in the last ten years more than 30 million barrels of oil.
This oil rig, located on the northern slope of Alaska is also frequented by polar bears and they have needed to install an intelligent security system capable of detecting them, but it's also tough enough to defy the extreme conditions north of the Arctic Circle, In this area, temperatures drop to less 40 degrees Fahrenheit and there is a period of darkness two months out of the year.
To meet these challenges, Caelus Natural Resources Alaska adopted an innovative safety system of Bosch.
“Our ultimate goal is the protection of personnel, But we want a shape that has the least impact on polar bears”, explains John Hellén, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager of Caelus Natural Resources Alaska.
To avoid unwanted encounters between humans and bears, an innovative security solution was needed in ODS, able to detect approaching animals as soon as possible. And, In addition, it had to operate reliably and efficiently in the difficult Arctic environment.
Bosch solved this challenge with the MIC IP Fusion 9000i camera. Eleven have already been installed in SDGs and another five are in the planning stage.
It is a device that combines a robust design with Intelligent Video Analytics and is designed to be used in applications of extreme conditions. This smart camera is equipped with a solid metal housing and Bosch Starlight technology. Even in the most difficult weather conditions and in low light, The system produces high-quality images.
"Two weeks after installing the cameras, we recorded two polar bear events in SDG. The images were crystal clear. We even have a camera installed at the 30 meters off the ground, and the resolution is surprisingly good “, explains Dale Hoffmann, former Land Manager of Caelus Natural Resources Alaska.
Process and interpret information
Another advantage of the MIC IP Fusion 9000i is the integration of the Intelligent Video Analytics tool that allows it to process and interpret the data directly at the source.
The cameras can detect polar bears early thanks to their thermal imaging technology, even when the animals are swimming or far away in the distance.
As soon as a hazard is recognized, the tracking function of Bosch cameras is automatically activated and staff are notified. So, The necessary security measures can be implemented quickly and efficiently.
Bosch solution has increased safety for humans and animals in SDGs, Regardless of the weather, light or weather conditions.
