Narita will be the first airport in Japan to install facial recognition at customs
For the implementation of this project, that will begin testing in April 2019, An electronic gate will be installed in the customs area equipped with facial recognition technology.
The Narita International Airport has commissioned NEC Corporation Installation, in the customs inspection area, of an electronic door incorporating facial recognition technology. Testing is scheduled to begin at the Terminal 3 from 2019.
This will be the first time facial recognition technology has been used for customs procedures at an airport in Japan.
The electronic procedure gate will be installed in the customs inspection area where passengers enter after being admitted through immigration. Passengers' identities will be confirmed at the electronic declaration posts, whose outputs will be equipped with NEC's facial recognition technology.
In addition, A smartphone app will facilitate electronic baggage declaration by allowing travelers to register their contents and passport information.
These methods are expected to reduce congestion and shorten the waiting time at the customs inspection area.
The facial image taken at the electronic gate of the procedure is only used for identification purposes and is properly disposed of after use.
